RK Sharma, a resident of Dwarka Sector 12, fainted while on a morning walk yesterday. Ramesh Mumukshu, another Dwarka resident, suffered an asthma attack, again on a morning walk. Unfortunately, these are not stray cases. They have one thing in common — the post- Diwali smog in the city.
Several people, especially senior citizens, have been reporting respiratory problems in the past couple of days. Most residents above 50, and those with asthma conditions, have foregone their morning walks owing to the heavy smog pervading the morning air.
People with no prior history of respiratory problems have taken to nebulisers and inhalers to be on the safer side.
“Reports say the use of firecrackers went down by half this year but we have double the smog as compared to last year,” said Ravi Jaitley, general secretary of Senior Citizens Association, Dwarka, and secretary of Harsukh Apartments managing committee. “It's been four days since Diwali but the smog doesn't show any signs of thinning. We had planned a Haridwar trip on November 5, which we had to cancel, owing to the havoc this smog has wreaked on most people. More than half the planned members are down with respiratory problems.”
Once avid morning walkers, many senior citizens have now been keeping their windows closed till as late as 10 in the morning and staying indoors. They are also encouraging other people to avoid the smog, which is at its worst in the early mornings and evenings.
“We have been spreading awareness about the ill-effects of the smog,” said DC Mathur, a senior citizen, secretary of Sukh Dukh Ke Sathi and a resident of New Kanchanjunga Apartments in Sector 23. “We are keeping an eye on weather reports and praying for this smog to go.”
