The Muncipal Corporation of Delhi has decided that all schools run by it will be closed on November 5.
When City Spidey spoke to Man Singh, director of press for the corporation, he confirmed this. “We will take further decision after observing the state of pollution in the city,” he said.
However, Satya Sharma, East Delhi Municipal Corporation mayor, said, “I have no such information. I am busy inspecting Chhath Puja ghats.”
The move comes a day after the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) said that air pollution in the city was at its worst in recent times. The CSE asked the Delhi government on November 3 to issue health alerts and convey to the public that children should stay indoors.
But when City Spidey contacted Nagender Sharma, spokesperson for the Delhi government, he said, “We have not declared November 5 a holiday.”
Schools in Mayur Vihar remained open on Friday. Santosh Kumar, a staff member at ASN Senior Secondary School in Mayur Vihar Phase I Extension, said that they had not received any advisory from the government yet.
Meanwhile, a few schools in the NCR declared November 4 a holiday, and others suspended their morning assemblies on November 3. For instance, the branches of Shri Ram School in Gurgaon and Delhi have suspended classes till November 7, except for Std X and Std XII. It has changed timings for students of these classes to 10 am - 3 pm.
