Social media goes crazy after Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 declared void

In what people are callng a surgical strike against black money, Prime Minister Narendra Modi demonetised the denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 with effect from November 8 midnight. The surprising move was followed by yet another suprise — the speed at which social media was inundated with funny memes and images about the denominations being declared void. Most status messages on Facebook were about the massive change, with people having a field trip with it. Sarcasm Hub, a popular Facebook page, reacted by posting this:

With most ATMs and banks slated to remain closed on November 9 and November 10, there were long queues in ATMs across the country, with an unprecedented number of people drawing multiples of Rs 400.

With the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes now reduced to mere pieces of paper, social media had a field day. We bring you the best of posts doing the rounds on WhatsApp groups and Facebook:

Well, what do you do with your wads of Rs 500 and 1,000 now? This guy seems to have the perfect answer. There's a similar one doing the rounds with the notes doubling as paper plates for chips.

We particularly liked this one, which spoofs the iconic exchange between the two sons in Deewar, with the Maa replaced with Rs 100, of course.

There were some, like Himika Chaudhuri, who realised the recent change could in fact be the weight-loss solution we've all been waiting for!

Pablo Escobar, the Colombian druglord, reportedly had so much money that he used to burn notes in his fireplace to keep his daughter warm. Now that no one wants your Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, you can do the same, true gangsta-style. Here's one image comparing Indians to Pablo Escobar from Netflix's Narcos

Rest in Peace, guys. No longer relevant from November 9 (sob sob).

No matter what the topic, social media has to drag Rahul Gandhi in. No list of Indian memes and forwards will be complete without Congress's eternal child. Here's one with RaGa wondering if he can erase a zero each on the notes to make them 50- and 100-rupee notes instead. Here's another one, this time on a Facebook status message:

And then there were others, like this guy, who had probably seen it coming. Well, at least it looks like it from the image he posted on his Facebook timeline —

"Like a boss!"
