Police Mitra: Police recruit residents to keep watch

Delhi police on November 19 launched Police Mitra, an initiative intended to involve the common man in vigilance. It was launched by the Commissioner of Delhi Police Alok Kumar Verma (IPS) at Sector 10 Dwarka in the South West Police Range of Delhi. Joint Commissioner of Police, South Western Range, Dependra Pathak, DCP South West Surender Kumar and other senior officials were also present at the launch.

Officials said that the initiative “Police Mitra” is an endeavour to involve members of civil society in prevention of crime, maintenance of law and order and for better communication with citizens as a whole to ensure improved social orderliness.

A total of 284 Police Mitra including 49 women have been enrolled in this scheme started from South-West Range. The scheme will soon be launched for entire Delhi.

Commissioner of Delhi Police Alok Kumar Verma in his speech congratulated and welcomed the Police Mitra on board. "I thank each one of you for accepting the responsibility of assisting Delhi Police in various police duties such as crime prevention, crowd management, traffic management, safety of women, children and senior citizens."

He also added that the initiative was based on PM Modi's suggestion at the DG and IG’s conference last year to involve citizens for effective policing.

Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar Verma distributed Police Mitra armbands and ID cards to the enrolled Police Mitra on the occasion. According to the police officials, the enrolled members are from varied backgrounds - farmers, housewives, self-employed individuals, slum dwellers, social workers, retired officials, students, advocates and retired army officials had been roped in for the job. For enrolment, all individuals had to pass through a verification process as per the detailed standing order issued by Delhi Police.

"Monthly meetings between the SHO and the Police Mitra have already been planned," said DCP South West Surender Kumar. "The Police Mitra will be meeting the SHOs in groups of five, including a woman. They will also meet the Deputy Commissioner of Police every three months. I appeal to the RWAs, social organisations and residents to support the initiative.”
