Hard Cash Day 20: Small shops in Noida take to e-wallet

Driven by the twin concerns of declining business and returning change to customers, businesses and vendors — even street stalls — have started accepting online payments.

Hard Cash Day 20: Small shops in Noida take to e-wallet

Driven by the cash crunch and dipping business, vendors are now opting for e-wallet payments. A lot of businesses in Noida, even the small ones, have started using online platforms, such as Paytm, to be able to continue providing services to customers.

Raj Sharma, a resident of Sector 31, feels the currency crisis, particularly returning change, can be tackled if more and more people — shops, businesses, small vendors — start to accept online payments.

Another resident from Vivek Vihar society in Sector 82, Suneha Mishra, said, "I have been using Paytm for some time now. It took me a while to get used to it, but it has made payments so much easier."

Even streetfood stalls in Noida have taken to the e-wallet. Most customers, they say, run up a bill between Rs 100 and Rs 200, and more often than not, they have a Rs 2,000 note to offer. In such cases, giving them back the change becomes a huge problem.

Ramesh Kumar, of Sector 27, has a small food stall. After demonetisation, his business fell by 80 per cent — but that's not the case now. "After I started accepting online payments, my business has picked up again," he said.
