A technical team will soon be investigating the breakdown of a passenger lift in Amrapali Sapphire in Sector 45, Noida, after a 78-year-old resident was trapped in it for 30 minutes earlier this week.

JN Batra was in a lift in Tower J when it got stuck between the seventh and the eighth floors. He lodged an FIR against Amrapali group and Kone Elevator India Pvt Ltd at the Sector 39 police station. In his complaint, he mentioned that despite having paid regular maintenance charges for the upkeep of facilities, the builder had failed to carry out proper maintenance of the elevators, which had caused the breakdown.

Amarnath Yadav, station house officer with the Sector 39 police station, said a technical team consisting of experts from elevator-manufacturing fields will be called in to investigate the matter.

According to some residents, all elevators in the society are designed to use the emergency power source during a power failure to prevent passengers from being trapped inside cars. In case of a power outage, the elevators are supposed to enable one to get off at the nearest floor, which did not happen with Batra.

"I had called up Kone to enquire why the elevator failed to use its emergency power source," said PK Gupta, a resident. "Company representatives informed me that they had not been carrying out regular maintenance of the elevators, as the builder had not cleared his dues."

When City Spidey tried to contact Amrapali group, its spokesperson was not available for comment.
