Income tax officials, police seize Rs 27 lakh in Ghaziabad

Income tax officials with the help of Ghaziabad police seized Rs 27 lakh from two men near Kaushambi police outpost on December 9. The men were travelling in an Ola cab from Hapur to Sahibabad.

The amount seized comprised of Rs 14, 84,000 in denominations of 100 and 2,000, and Rs 12,16,000 in old denominations of 500 and 1,000.

The seizure comes at a time when the country is grappling with a severe cash crunch following the demonetisation. The government’s move to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes was primarily aimed at curbing the problem of black money.

According to the police, income tax officers were aware of the currency being transported and they sought the Ghaziabad police’s assistance.

“We had received a tip-off about the cash being transferred and so we were waiting for them,” said an income tax official.

Income tax and police officials stopped the cab on the road next to Kaushambi police outpost and searched it. They found the cash in a bag with the men.

The men involved in the incident are Lavdeep Sharma, a physiotherapist, and Amit, a tutor. They are aged between 30 and 35, and are both residents of Shalimar Garden, Ghaziabad.

Anil Kumar Yadav, CO, Indirapuram zone, said, “The case is complicated and an investigation is underway. The income tax department will conduct a thorough probe about the origin of the money. Once they come up with a report, appropriate action will be taken.”

“The two men have been let off for now, and will be called for further investigation on Monday [December 12],” said a police official. The seized cash is being kept at the Kaushambi police outpost.
