Hard Cash Day 35: Same old story after bank holidays

"When I am allowed to withdraw up to Rs 24,000 why are the banks letting me withdraw only Rs 6,000?" said an irate Gurgaon resident.

Hard Cash Day 35: Same old story after bank holidays

After 3 consecutive bank holidays till December 12, the queues outside most Gurgaon banks were longer than usual. And with banks still unable to provide ample cash, the queues didn't seem to be moving.

"I wanted to withdraw Rs 24,000, but the bank allowed me to withdraw only Rs 6,000," said Sanjay Singh, who was queuing the whole day at the HDFC Bank in Sushant Lok. "The government should do something about this problem and banks should compensate us for their failure to provide cash."

Rajender Singh, a farmer from Sultanpur village, is furious. "I do not own a debit card," said Singh. "We are dependent on cash and we don't have any of it. Our entire money is deposited in one bank account and I am unable to withdraw any of it despite having queued up in front of banks for hours."

Mukesh kumar, an MNC employee standing in a queue for three hours, said, "What the hell is going on? What is the government doing? What is the RBI doing? People are standing in queues for hours on end and yet going home unable to withdraw cash. This is madness."

To add to their woes, even Central government's Digital India campaign is not of any help to residents. Electronic Data Capture machines (also known as card-swiping machines) from MG Road to the city bus stand were out for order for several hours. As a result, people were also unable to swipe their debit/credit cards to make payments.

"My fuel tank is almost empty," said Manjeet Singh, who was at the petrol pump to fill his car tank. "I don't have any cash and the card machine is not working. The government should either solve the cash-crunch problem, or ensure a reliable digital support for payments. It's an epic failure."
