The solid waste management initiative at Brahma Apartments, Sector 7, Dwarka, which started a few months ago, has found full support from residents. It even garnered appreciation at a recent meeting between Dwarka residents and SDMC.
The initiative was discussed at a recent meeting at the Sector 23 community hall. Dwarka Forum members informed the deputy commissioner of SDMC, Najafgarh Zone, that the solid waste management programme was a success.
“We asked the deputy commissioner to consider the drive a pilot project supported by Dwarka Forum and SDMC. He asked his officials to spread the concept in other societies too,” said Madhuri Varshney, president of Dwarka Forum.
When City Spidey spoke to Indra Mani Tripathi, secretary of the society’s managing committee, he said their efforts were aimed at protecting the environment and fostering sanitation. “We are not only supporting waste segregation and its disposal inside the society, we also hope to inspire other societies to adopt the system,” he said.
He added, “We have named this initiative ‘Swachh Brahma Swasth Brahma'. This line is also displayed in our premises to inspire residents. The initiative has been very effective.”
The society has three dustbins of different colour to segregate waste. The waste is segregated at the household, block and society levels. The municipal corporation then collects it for proper disposal.
The society, in association with Dwarka Forum, organised a workshop for waste segregation in September. After this, solid waste management was conceptualised and the management decided to adopt it in the society.
“We want to give a ‘green’ message to the community that where there is a will, there is a way. We want to make our society a zero-waste one and are working towards it. Management of waste is just the first step. Soon we will be taking up composting as well,” said Munish Kundra, a member of the society's managing committee.
