Hard Cash Day 44: Are we ready to go digital?

With online transactions and mobile wallets faltering every now and then, should we be even relying on them?

Hard Cash Day 44: Are we ready to go digital?

Dwarka residents are facing numerous problems with online payments and mobile wallets. City Spidey discussed the issue with various residents to understand the problems they were facing.

"On December 14, I made a payment of Rs 13,220 to BSES using Paytm but I did not get a receipt of the payment," said Purshotam Behl, vice-president of Sector 8 RWA. "I noticed that the amount had been deducted from my account but BSES had not received the payment. It was only after following up for six days with both Paytm and BSES did I receive a confirmation from the latter that the amount had been received. Paytm had acknowledged my email about the problem on December 16 but the payment did not go through till December 21. I am quite wary of using Paytm now. I am not happy with their service either. If an electricity-bill payment exceeds the due date, there's a fine levied on the customer and I narrowly escaped that. Now I have decided to use Paytm for smaller transactions upto Rs 500 and not more."

Priya Rawat, a resident of Sector 13, had a similar story to tell.

"I had used Paytm to make three payments — two of Rs 500 and one of Rs 1,000," said Rawat. "None of the payments were successful. I have been following up with Paytm over the past month and all they had to say was I needed to get in touch with my bank. The bank, on the other hand, said it was Paytm I need to get in touch with, as the amount had been debited from my account. While the bank was prompt with responses, Paytm is not at all bothered and that is what cheesed me off. All Paytm has done is send automated responses which are of no help and at times not even related to the issue. I don't know how much time I should waste chasing after these two."

SN Pal, a resident of Sri Krishna Apartments in Sector 5, wasted five days just to withdraw Rs 10,000, as the bank could not give him cash owing to a prolonged server problem. "I had to take a couple of leaves from office to withdraw the amount," said Pal.
