MV I: Parents score a victory over Ahlcon Public School

The residents of group housing societies in Mayur Vihar Phase I and Mayur Vihar Phase I Extension have scored a victory against Ahlcon Public School. The Directorate of Education (DoE) has told the school to roll back its decision to increase the annual fee for the 2016-17 session.

The DoE has asked the school's management to refund the extra amount to parents. It has also asked the school to make the rollback known on its website.

In April 2016, the school increased the annual fee by 10 per cent. However, the parents, mostly belonging to group housing societies, had vehemently opposed the decision.

Rajeev Batra, a resident of Rosewood Apartments in Mayur Vihar Phase I Extension, told City Spidey, “About 250 parents signed a petition expressing disapproval over the fee hike. We had three meetings with the school management, and in every meeting, we demanded a rollback of the hike. After the school refused to pay any heed to our demands, we approached the DoE.”

Prateek Singhal, a resident of Una Enclave in Mayur Vihar Phase I, said, “The hike was implemented without consulting the parents. If the school has no regard for what we think, why call parent-teacher meetings? I cannot thank the DoE enough for its prompt action. It’s a huge win for us parents.”

When City Spidey contacted school authorities, a member of the management, Sushurthi Banerjee, confirmed that they had indeed increased the fees by 10 per cent in April. However, she added, “The hike happened with the consent of the parents and after following proper procedures. We followed DoE guidelines. The issue was discussed at a parent-teacher meeting in March.”
