Garbage crisis in East Delhi spirals out of control

Garbage crisis in East Delhi spirals out of control

It’s been three days since 20,000 sanitation workers of EDMC went on strike to protest against non-payment of wages. Who’s paying the price? The residents, of course!

The dhalaos [waste receptacles] are heaping up; there’s rotting waste everywhere on the roads – so much so that the residents are finding it difficult to even walk.

The RWAs and CGHS federation have thus decided to hold a meeting with deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia on January 9. They already met EDMC mayor Satya Sharma and East Delhi MP Mahesh Giri on January 7.

MM Khatri, secretary of CGHS federation of IP Extension, said, "We appealed to them to sort their issues with the sanitation workers. But instead of giving any positive response, they blamed the Delhi government for the crisis. We are now going to meet Manish Sisodia, and have requested RWAs and other representative to come forward."

According to SP Sharma, secretary of CGHS federation of Vasundhra Enclave, protests by sanitation workers have become a routine affair. He said, "After every few months, East Delhi turns into a landfill site. If the corporation is unable to pay salaries, the government should provide financial assistance. But both AAP and BJP are more interested in passing the buck."

Raj Kumar, RWA president of Preet Vihar, said they would seek Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal's intervention on the matter. He snapped, "Enough is enough! Things have come to a boil. The RWAs have joined hands to put pressure on the concerned authorities.”
