Residents and traders in Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad and Bagpat have been facing difficulties since the UP election notifications were implemented.

Many head towards Delhi on a daily basis for business and other purposes, carrying cash with them.

Rajesh, a supplier of milk packets and bread in Noida, said, “Shopkeepers pay me in cash. I deposit this amount with companies in Delhi and pick up supplies for the next day. Since the election notifications came into effect, our difficulties have increased. Police checking is on at several places. Fearing that cash might be confiscated, I am not able to carry cash with me. This has become a hindrance in obtaining supplies.”

Jaibhagwan, a supplier of flour to shopkeepers in Ghaziabad, told City Spidey, “We don’t know what to do. Neither do we know how much cash we can carry, nor do we know what to do if we need to carry more cash than the limit.”

When we took up the issue with Gaurav Grover, ASP Noida, he said, “According to the election commission, people can carry cash up to Rs 50,000. However, if we suspect that someone is taking cash for a political party, he or she can be stopped and interrogated. The amount can also be seized. In case someone is carrying a greater amount, he or she should have details on where the money came from, what it will be used for and from which bank it has been withdrawn. If the person has documents to support his claims, the police will let him go. Otherwise the cash will be seized.”
