Exotica Fresco Apt, Noida: Zero cash it is

If cashless it is, so be it. A group of residents from Exotica Fresco Apartments, an upscale residential society in Sector 137, Noida, is working hard to make the society go as cashless as possible.

The residents have started an awareness drive in the society, particularly for support staff, such as car cleaners, dhobis and newspaper sellers.

The idea of making the society go 100 per cent cashless was mooted by Varun Sharma, a businessman and a resident of the society. He was hooked to the thought after he saw a small vegetable vendor outside Paras Tierea Apartments accept payments through e-wallet.

Sharma promptly spoke to the society maintenance manager and started a drive to sensitise vendors.

“The society administration and the watchmen have already gone cashless. A list of maids and vendors who work for the society has been prepared, and we’ll help them open bank accounts. They will also be trained on how to transfer money through e-wallets,” elaborated Sharma.

Initially there were a lot of problems, as most of the small service providers had very little knowledge of online transactions, confessed Pramod Taragi, one of the key supporters of the drive.

Taragi added, “It is not necessary to have a smartphone to carry out online transactions — some basic payments can be made via a simple phone as well. The Unstructured Supplementary Service Data [USSD] code, which connects the telecom operator’s server to the bank’s server, is an alternative option. It allows one to access one's bank account even on a basic phone.”

Pawan Nehra, another resident, further explained, “The USSD code, *99#, works across banks. One needs to link the phone number with the bank account to avail of the benefit. Once registered, he/she can dial *99# to carry out online transactions.”

“It’s a win-win situation. A few of the security guards have started transferring money to their relatives online. They are happy with the system, as they don’t need to visit the bank to transfer money,” added Koshlendra Singh, another resident.

Other residents who support the drive include Nitin Chandna, Vijay Kumar, Amit Pal, Gaurav Demiwal, Ranjeet Kumar, Naveen Kumar, Niraj Kumar, Chandra Shekhar Pandey, Somesh Aggarwal, Mohit Singla and Abhishek Singh.
