East End Apts: Residents distribute food on Makar Sankranti

Ayyappa Samiti, a group of residents from East End Apartments celebrated Makar Sankranti by distributing food to over 200 poor people on January 15.

Plates of puri-sabzi-halwa were given away from a small set up beside the society's main gate. Older residents were seen managing the crowd and urged people to dispose of their plates at a dustbin near the counter.

S Shankar, former director of National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) and a resident of the society, had formed the Samiti around 15 years back.

"This tradition of distributing food on Makar Sankranti goes back 15 years," said Shankar.

Shankar's group is named after Lord Ayyappan or Ayyappa, a Hindu deity, who, according to Hindu mythology, was born out of the union between Lord Shiva and the mythical enchantress Mohini, who is regarded as an avatar of Lord Vishnu.
