“I will be late. Stuck in a jam.”

Commuters across the NCR were stuck in nasty traffic snarls, thanks to dress rehearsals for the Republic Day parade.

“I will be late. Stuck in a jam.”

On January 23, residents of the NCR seemed to be sharing the same text message — “I will be late. Stuck in a jam.”

Delhi came to a grinding halt due to traffic snarls across the NCR. Although traffic snarls are not new to daily commuters but on the morning of the aforementioned date, their travel woes increased owing to dress rehearsal for the Republic Day parade.

Vikram Mahaldar, a resident of Indirapuram, drives every day from Ahinsa Khand I to the Jasola business centre for work. His usual travel time is an hour but on January 23 he reached work after three hours. “I got stuck in traffic jams almost everywhere till Jasola. Mahamaya Flyover was the worst, with bumper-to-bumper traffic, “says Mahaldar.

Commuters on their way to Central Delhi suffered the most, as the main road from Vijay Chowk to Red Fort was closed due to the Republic Day parade. Traffic diversions in and around Rajpath helped, but only marginally.

The stretch near Crown Plaza hotel, Mayur Vihar Phase I, also witnessed slow-moving traffic. “The entire stretch from Dharamshila hospital towards New Ashok Nagar Metro station witnessed cars moving at snail’s pace. Commuters couldn’t understand the reason behind the unexpected traffic jams around 11 am,” says a daily commuter.

Sonia Singh, a Faridabad resident, reached Delhi from Chandigarh in the morning only to be greeted with traffic jam in Daryaganj. She says, “I got stuck for about an hour and a half right after I came out of the railway station. But I calmed myself down and told myself: Welcome to the capital!”
