Pragjyotishpur Apartments: A mini Assam in Dwarka

It's hard not to imagine yourself in Assam in this Sector 10 society, especially when it's celebrating a state festival.

Pragjyotishpur Apartments: A mini Assam in Dwarka Pragjyotishpur Apartments in Dwarka celebrates Magh Bihu

Pragjyotishpur Apartments, in Plot 7, Sector 10, Dwarka, never misses a chance to celebrate Assamese festivals, since a majority of its population hails from the state. Tapping one's foot to the reverberating beats of the traditional dhol while wolfing down varieties of the winter-special pithe, it’s hard not to imagine oneself in Assam.

Recently, the society celebrated the Bhogali Bihu, or Magh Bihu. President Dr Nilmani Sarmah said, “There are 140 flats in all, and there are Assamese families in about 100 of them. So it feels like a mini Assam here. The very name of the society — Pragjyotishpur, the ancient capital of Assam — suggests our links with the state.”

He added, “Since the inception of the society in 1983, we have tried to hold on to our culture. But the entire community — Assamese or not — celebrates with us. We want to pass on this legacy to the next generation.”

Residents enjoy pithe as they celebrate Magh Bihu

“We celebrate Rongali Bihu in April, Bhogali Bihu in January and Shankar Dev puja. These celebrations are particularly important for children, as they keep them in touch with their roots. You can see people playing folk instruments as well,” elaborates Dr NC Hazarika, a senior citizen in the society, who loves to play the dhol himself.

The society's women are a big part of these celebrations.

President of Uruli, an association of women from Assam in Delhi, Rumi, said, “We live like a family here — as we would have in Assam. We wear traditional attire on festivals and also participate in Bihu dances.”

Anupma Bhatnagar, a non-Assamese resident of the society, feels just as excited about the festivities. In fact, she shared a few photographs with City Spidey, and added, “I love Assamese culture and participate in all the celebrations. Our society is like a mini Assam in Dwarka.”
