The residents of cooperative group housing societies (CGHS) may no longer have to face the problem of overflowing sewers. The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) is set to lay a new sewer line, starting from a treatment plant in Mandawali.

The new line will cover the group housing societies of Mayur Vihar Phase I, Mayur Vihar Phase I Extension and IP Extension. The move is expected to bring relief to 400 CGHS in East Delhi.

It will also benefit the sewerage flow of Mayur Vihar Phase II, Trilokpuri, Chilla, Khichripur, Vinod Nagar, Kalyanpuri, Pandav Nagar.

Delhi water minister and DJB chairman Kapil Mishra laid the foundation of the project last week.

The project, expected to cost Rs 20 crore, is supposed to be finished in the next two-and-a-half months.

Rishi Kant, a junior engineer with DJB, said to City Spidey that this was indeed a much-needed development. He added, "The DJB will allow the area RWAs to visit the sewerage treatment plant at least once a month to check its functioning."

The sewerage problem has been a persistent one in East Delhi. Some housing societies even had their DJB water connection disconnected, complaining of sewer-mixed water.

Ratan Lal Gupta, managing committee secretary of Vardhman Apartments, said, "We disconnected our water connection around three years back, and have been using groundwater since then.”
