The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon recently decided to set up composting sites in the city to improve waste management.

V Umashankar, the municipal commissioner, told City Spidey, “The issue of garbage accumulating in the city has risen after the shutdown of the Bandhwari waste treatment plant. We have decided to make composting sites, which will be maintained by the RWAs, in various parts of the city to help manage waste.”

“At these composting sites, the manure, made from both dry and wet garbage, will be sold and the money spent on the maintenance of these sites. Work on the project will begin soon,” added Umashankar.

Meanwhile, residents of the city have welcomed the decision. “There is a huge heap of garbage in our society. If there is a composting site nearby, it will help us get rid of the garbage and keep the environment clean,” said Shailesh Sharma, president of Apna Enclave RWA, Sector 4.

Bhagat Singh, RWA president of Uppal's Southend, Sector 49, said, “Our association pays Rs 2,000 to the garbage picker every month to keep the society clean. We don’t know where he dumps the garbage. But as the city lacks a place to recycle garbage, MCG’s decision will help curb issues related to garbage management.”

“In many places, the garbage is burnt. This is banned by NGT. These composting sites will also curb the burning of garbage, seen in many places in the morning hours in Gurgaon,” Singh added.

“The burning of garbage releases toxic fumes, which are especially harmful for children. Composting will help address this problem,” said Joginder Singh, RWA president of Uniworld Gardens II, Sector 47.
