Shaheed Smarak Sansthan remembers Noida's martyrs

The landscaping here is a feast for the eyes. Often visited by former servicemen to keep the camaraderie alive, Shaheed Smarak, right opposite the Army Public School in Sector 29, Noida, is a triservice memorial dedicated to the martyrs of Noida.

But today was a very special day. The place was celebrating its 16th Annual Day. Around 9 am, a number of ex-servicemen, along with a host of Noida residents, assembled at the beautifully maintained memorial. Gradually families of 38 martyrs, civil and military dignitaries, IAS and IPS officers, defence personnel, veterans, and students of the Army Public, Cambridge and Khaitan schools joined in. It was a moment of solemnity but also great pride.

Admiral Sunil Lanba, PVSM, AVSM, ADC and the Chief of Naval Staff,  pays homage to Noida martyrs

The chief guest, Admiral Sunil Lanba, PVSM, AVSM, ADC and the Chief of Naval Staff, paid homage to martyrs by laying a wreath on the memorial stone, followed by Major General RP Singh, AVSM, VSM, ADG (D&V), Army HQ (D&V) and AVM JK Singh, AVSM, VSM, Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Engineering) on behalf of the Army and Air Force respectively. Children from the Army Public School set the tone of the day with deeply stirring melodies.

Reena Lanba, wife of Admiral Sunil Lanba and President of the Navy Wives Welfare Association, presented gifts to the families of the 38 martyrs. The Chief of Naval Staff released the Noida Shaheed Smarak annual Souvenir 2017 and addressed the august gathering.

Admiral Lanba appreciated the work being done by Shaheed Smarak Sanstha and Noida veterans. He complimented the veterans for their foresight and dedication in maintaining the only triservice memorial in India and the way they took care of the families of the Noida martyrs. He also appreciated the presence of the Noida youth in large numbers in the day's gathering and underlined his faith in them as the future of the country.

“Such memorials are not only built for martyrs but also for society,” said Admiral Lanba.

As if to echo his views, the Indian Navy band struck the right chord with the gathering and concluded the ceremony on a spirited musical note.
