Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation to test bio-digester toilets

Originally a DRDO technology to reduce the use of water and decompose human waste, these new toilets will first be constructed on a small scale to determine their feasibility.

Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation to test bio-digester toilets

Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) has planned to introduce eco-friendly toilets in the city. The special toilets will be equipped with a bio-digester technology, which will enable them to decompose faecal matter and convert it to organic substances that can be used as fertiliser.

The technology used in the toilets was originally developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for human waste disposal for armed forces deployed at high altitude locations and was later extended for use in certain train toilets in India.

According to GMC officials, the concept of bio-digester toilets will be applied on a small scale first, to ascertain its feasibility. The toilets will be used on a larger scale once the pilot is a success. The project is set to minimise the usage of water and reduce the amount of human waste in an eco-friendly manner.

Dr RK Yadav, health officer of GMC, told City Spidey that according to a survey, most public toilets provided by the corporation were connected to sewer lines of the city and hence not feasible for the initiative.

"The entire process of the degrading waste will not be functional if it's connected to sewer lines," said Dr Yadav. "The initiative is still in its planning phase. We will be constructing new toilets to test this technology. Once its feasibility is confirmed, contracts will be issued and agencies will be hired to carry it out."
