Ghaziabad went plastic-free on January 21. Only on paper.

Despite the ban, plastic and polythene bags are still being used freely in the city. Never mind if the violation attracts a penalty of Rs 5,000 to Rs 1 lakh, and a five-year jail term.

A survey of Ghaziabad's main markets by City Spidey — including Subzi Mandi, Turab Nagar and Nayvug Market — revealed that the ban has had no impact on the ground. These pictures say it all.

Though most residents City Spidey spoke to said they supported the ban and that they go to the markets with their own cloth bags, shopkeepers have a different story to tell. They say customers still insist that they get plastic bags to carry back their shopping. If refused, they just leave without buying anything.

City Magistrate Brahm Dev Singh Yadav maintains that tough action will be taken against any shopkeeper found using plastic bags.
