Commuters using Metro smart cards need not worry about the credit balance in their cards after March 31.
Following concerns over the fate of the balance in Metro smart cards, City Spidey spoke to officials of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to get clarification on the issue.
Mahendra Yadav, deputy spokesperson of DMRC, said, “The credit balance in smart cards will be carried forward even when the cards become non-refundable. Commuters can use the balance in their cards after March.”
The official clarified that the money would not be deposited in the corporation’s bank account.
To comply with RBI guidelines and make smart cards inter-operable, the corporation had given a statement recently saying that the new cards issued from April 1 and existing cards would become non-refundable from this date. It had also said that only the security deposit, after deduction of relevant charges, would be returned on surrendering the card.
The corporation has given commuters who wish to get cash in return for the credit balance in their cards, a sunset period of March 1 to March 31, during which they can get a refund.
Metro smart cards can be availed at Rs 200. The card holder gets Rs 150 credit balance and Rs 50 is reserved as security deposit.
