The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) launched a handbook on waste management and a waste-management section on its main portal to raise resident participation in the process.
Gurugram Handbook For Waste Management, and the section — to be found on MCG’s official website (www.mcg.gov.in) from March 20 — were inaugurated by Union minister Rao Inderjeet.
The handbook was published by Gurgaon First, a citizens’ initiative group. Shubhra Puri, the group’s founder, said, “I wanted to do something creative in the domain of waste management, which was the need of the hour. I also wanted the engagement of all stakeholders — it is important for all of us to participate in this fight together.”

“Both the handbook and the portal will motivate stakeholders to take up sustainable solutions for waste management, and will help in the execution of the Swachh Bharat Mission,” explained Inderjeet.
The portal will allow all RWAs to collaborate with the MCG to initiate effective waste management. All RWAs can register on the portal. After registering, each RWA will be required to identify a spot for local composting — they’ll be accountable for segregating and treating waste generated by them.
The MCG, on its part, will conduct workshops for maids and residents on how to segregate waste. It will also ensure that people do not burn waste, which is one of the prime causes of pollution.
V Umashankar, MCG commissioner, said, “The portal will serve as a one-stop platform for residents and RWAs of Gurgaon to access technical support, latest information and the best practices in the field of waste management. The handbook will serve as a reference book.”
The handbook has five different sections, including a directory of schools, institutions, hotels, hospitals and various RWAs in Gurgaon.
The programme was attended by about 400 people, including different RWAs, NGOs, citizens’ groups, schools, colleges, and corporate and industry big guns.
