Shipra Krishna Vista blocks road in protest against vendors Residents assembled during the protest

About 45 residents of Shipra Krishna Vista, a residential society in Indirapuram, held a protest against street vendors of Bihari Market on the evening of March 19.

Bihari Market is an evening market that operates from 6 pm till 11 pm near the society and has been an issue of encroachment for a long time. Residents say the vendors block an arterial road, which runs along the right side of the society, to conduct the market.

Residents blocked the road near Gate No. 3 of the society and the Swarnjayanti Road behind the society during the protest. The protest disrupted traffic on the road for hours. Sloganeering against the vegetable and fruit vendors was also part of the protest. Residents asked the Indirapuram police to vacate them as soon as possible. The police then removed the vendors from the area.

LB Maheshwari, a resident, said, "We assembled the residents for the protest early evening and then informed the Indirapuram police. We gradually took over the entire road to block the traffic, which is exactly what happens here every evening when the Bihari Market vendors perch their carts for selling."

Following the residents’ repeated complaints to Deepak Kumar, SSP, Ghaziabad, the vendors of Bihari Market were driven away by a police anti-encroachment drive early this week. The police had also set up barricades in the makeshift market area to keep away the encroachers. However, residents complain that the vegetable and fruit vendors have started coming back again to Swarnjayanti Road.

Deepak Sethi, general secretary of the society, said, "We have been trying to chase them away for two days now. We will never let them arrange their market here as the traffic snarls due to them has troubled us enough. This is an illegal, unauthorised market and we will not tolerate it anymore."

When City Spidey spoke to Pushpraj Kushwaha, in-charge of Niti Khand police outpost, he said, “Residents of the society had earlier also filed complaints regarding illegal operation of the market on the main road. Therefore, this step had to be taken. We have special orders to not allow any type of encroachment in this area."
