Sec 56, Gurgaon: 50 shades of dark

"With the area pitch dark in the evenings and the police seldom patrolling the area, it is obvious that chain-snatchers will strike in the sector time and again," said a resident.

Sec 56, Gurgaon: 50 shades of dark

A visit to the popular haunts in Gurgaon may convince an outsider to think of it as a city of blinding lights.

Residents living in Sector 56, Gurgaon, however, will beg to differ.

They said streetlights in their sector have not been functioning properly for years. They avoid walking on the streets after sunset, as the area plunges into complete darkness. There have also been many instances of chain-snatching in the sector.

Over the years, they have lodged several complaints with Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) to fix the problem. MCG did send a team to fix the lights, but only once in all these years. And the solution they provided was temporary, at best.

"I have been living in this sector for the past eight years," said Jyoti Singh, a resident of Aabhas Apartments. "There are only a few streetlights that work. Of the ones working, many are hidden behind trees. With the area completely dark in the evenings and the police seldom patrolling the area, it is obvious that chain-snatchers will prefer to strike in the sector time and again. Why isn't MCG doing anything about it?"

"We have received several complaints regarding streetlights in Sector 56," said Rohit Yadav, MCG joint commissioner. "We have proposed to replace all lights with LED ones and sent an official memo to Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for approval. Residents have no need to worry. Their problem will be solved soon.”
