Residents of both new and old Gurgaon will heave a sigh of relief on March 23 as one side of the Hero Honda Chowk flyover is set to be opened to traffic. Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India Nitin Gadkari will inaugurate the flyover.

Ashok Sharma, project director, National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), told City Spidey, “The side of the flyover that will take traffic towards Jaipur will be opened to commuters from tomorrow. After that, work on the other side — meant for traffic moving towards Delhi — will begin.”

However, despite the Jaipur side of the flyover being opened, it will be used by traffic heading towards Delhi, as the number of commuters on that side is higher.

Work on the Delhi side of the flyover was stopped due to a few obstacles, such as small restaurants and a petrol pump on a service lane near the flyover. Once these obstacles are removed, work will be resumed.

Residents living near Hero Honda Chowk say they have suffered because of bad planning on the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway. The expressway divides the city into two parts after Rajiv Chowk. Commuters from Rajiv Chowk have been travelling about 8 km to take a U-turn at the Kherki Daula toll plaza, which causes traffic congestion. Many commuters coming from Delhi towards Sector 10, Gurgaon, take a wrong turn at Rajiv Chowk to reach their destination. This results in traffic jams.

Residents say the opening of the Hero Honda Chowk flyover is a huge relief. Nishant Kumar, a resident of Aashirwad Apartments in Sector 10A, Gurgaon, and an employee of the airline Emirates, says, “Earlier, to take a flight, I had to go to Rajiv Chowk and then take the expressway to reach the airport. The flyover will definitely be a big relief. This should have been done much earlier.”

The construction of the flyover began in February 2015. The 1.4-km-long flyover is being constructed as part of a three-level crossing at Hero Honda Chowk — an eight-lane flyover on the expressway, a four-lane underpass on Old Gurgaon Road and existing roads at Hero Honda Chowk. The existing roads are to be used exclusively by vehicles that come from Delhi and have to take Old Gurgaon Road.

The development was approved by NHAI and the Haryana government to decongest Hero Honda Chowk.
