Sushant Lok I-A residents protest against demolished boundary wall

On March 27, several residents of Block A, Sushant Lok I in Gurgaon, organised a peaceful protest against the Town and Country Planning Department, Haryana, over the demolition of a boundary wall on February 28. The wall, which used to separate Block A from the EWS section of the IVY, a high-end condominium, was demolished because it restricted one of the entries into Sushant Lok I.

Residents are raising security concerns after the demolition of the wall, alleging there is now no check on the entry and exit of vehicles. The authorities and the district town planner (DTP) had promised to rebuild the wall, but nothing has been done yet. The gate was part of the approved plan for Block A.

"The wall was demolished despite the town planner's assurances that it would not be done," said Dr DV Sethi, a resident of the block. "This has increased congestion in a small lane inside the sector. We feel cheated by the authorities, as the matter was settled on August 16, 2011. The traffic on the lane is now so bad that on March 16, a senior resident aged 78, named MM Vedi, lost his balance and fractured his hip bone, thanks to a speeding two-wheeler approaching from the adjoining IVY complex. He had to be hospitalised and had to undergo a hip-replacement surgery.”

The decision to demolish the wall has not gone down well with residents. They say if their voices are not heard, they will take the matter to court.

“While kids at the IVY are playing in lavish parks, the lives of our children are being threatened. They cannot play or ride their bicycles in the lane any more and are being forced to stay indoors,” said Shefali S Sahni, another resident.

Rajinder Sharma, District Town Planner (Enforcement), said, “The residents were aware that the wall was going to be demolished. No one can block an entry and exit to a township like this.”
