Gurgaon police instructs banks to ensure CCTV cameras in ATMs

Gurgaon police has instructed banks to ensure that all ATM kiosks in the city are equipped with CCTV cameras. The directions come in the wake of numerous cases of ATM fraud and cheating that have been taking place in the city.

The cyber cell of the police on March 22 wrote a letter to the banks asking them to instal CCTV cameras wherever absent, and repair those that are non-functional. The letter also said that the cameras should have a one-month recording facility and should capture footage both inside and outside the ATM.

There are more than 1,300 ATMs in Gurgaon, and a recent survey revealed that a large number of ATMs do not have functional CCTV systems. In many cases, when the police have asked for footage to investigate cases, the banks have not been able to provide records.

Manish Sehgal, the assistant commissioner of Gurgaon police, said this was necessary to ensure that video records were available when required. This would also make identifying the accused easier.

In 2016, 129 cases of ATM-card cloning and cheating were registered in Gurgaon; this year, a whopping 52 have already been registered. Online frauds registered in 2016 were 1,300, and this year the number has already reached 32.

Anand Kumar, in charge of the cyber cell, said since criminals were using increasingly sophisticated tools, video evidence would go a long way in helping nab them.
