Parched Dwarka RWAs hit the road

With water supply yet to be restored, Sector 12 residents come out to scream blue murder against DJB.

Parched Dwarka RWAs hit the road

As water crisis deepened in Dwarka, residents of Sector 12 came out in large number to protest. The entire sector is reeling under acute water shortage for over three weeks, leaving residents at the mercy of erratic tanker service.

Around 500 members of various RWAs, from pocket 2 to pocket 7, held a demonstration at Aashirvad Chowk area demanding immediate restoration of water supply.

“We have not received water since February 20. Delhi Jal Board (DJB) hasn't yet acted despite several complaints. Through this rally, we want to send a strong message to the DJB,” said SN Bhardwaj, President of Shubham Apartments RWA, Pocket 4.

Protestors told City Spidey that concerned authorities are not serious about finding a lasting solution to their problem.

“We were assured of regular water supply by Tuesday. Today, a day after, there is no sign of water. This time, we won’t lie low. We are planning a bigger demonstration,"said SK Joshi, President of Indraprastha Apartments, Pocket 3.

The common refrain among most residents is that after repeated requests, what they get from the DJB is a few water tankers, which is too little. For those lucky enough to fill their buckets, carrying them to their respective flats is a Herculean task. “Imagine how difficult it is for a person of my age to carry a bucketful of water to the third floor?" said MP Singh, a Shubham Apartments resident in his sixties.

"It’s time the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) took immediate steps to resolve the issue, lest the protest will spill over,” he added.

He is not off the mark given the angst among the residents who plan to intensify the agitation with large-scale demonstration if the problem persists next week.

However, Chief Engineer, DJB, Dwarka, RS Negi, has a few words of assurance. "We hope to restore regular water supply by tomorrow. We have streamlined the entire supply system,” he said.
