The school officials said the school had been around for more than 17 years now, but it was only after the group's initiatives that it started to change for the better.
A group of senior citizens living in Aditya Mega City, Indirapuram, have been involved in the development of an unaided girls' school for some time now. The school, owned by Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam, is in Makanpur village.
The group, on March 31, organised an event to award sets of stationery items and school bags to those who performed well in their school exams. Schoolteachers said these gifts encouraged the students to do better. Fifty-one students from standards VI to IX were awarded at the event. Sunil Sharma, Sahibabad MLA, was the chief guest.
Speaking to City Spidey, SK Mathur, a member of the group, said the school was lacking on several fronts.
"The school needs 10 classrooms but has only four," said Mathur. "At times, teachers have even resorted to conducting classes in the open. We have the resources to build classrooms, but need the municipal corporation's approval. We are also trying to get an RO system fitted in the school, as the children currently drink water from handpumps."

Members of the group said more and more residents were joining their cause.
