Gurgaon residents demand green belts to be fenced off

Residents of various Gurgaon sectors have demanded that green belts in their locality be fenced off using iron railings or barbwires. They cite reasons of security, encroachment and stray animals entering their localities through green belts.

Only a few sectors across the city — such as 5, 17, 27, 28, 31 and 41 — have fenced green belts. These fences often double as boundaries between sectors and societies. All new townships by private developers are fenced and have walls built along the perimeter.

RK Yadav, president of the Sector 46 RWA, said there were a lot of vacant green belts in their area and there was no boundary to the sector.

“People tend to throw waste and garbage at these sites, which attracts stray dogs, pigs and cattle," said Yadav. "Stray animals enter the sites and drag garbage out on to the roads. When it rains, this solid waste, mixed with rainwater, enters the compounds of houses in the surrounding areas. The sites also become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and flies.”

Green belts in the city are also encroached upon.

“The green belts in our area have barbwires along the periphery, but that does not ensure the safety of our society," said Divya Hardy, a resident of Sector 17C. "We need boundary walls. For the lack of a proper boundary wall, some people enter the green belt in the evenings and conduct illegal activities.”

Ashok Rana, a resident of Sector 23, said they were ready to even instal gates on the green-belt fencing.

However, an official from the horticulture department of HUDA, said, “We understand the residents’ concerns about fencing off green belts, but it is not a one-day task. We will look into the matter and try to find a plausible solution.”

HUDA administrator Yashpal Yadav said, “The RWAs can send us representations and we will get the work done, but it might take some time.”
