On April 15, Assam Association Gurgaon (AAG) organised Rongali Bihu 2017 at HUDA community centre in Sector 47. More than 2,000 people took part in celebrations to mark the start of the Assamese New Year and also the onset of the harvesting season.

The theme for the evening: "O Mor Apunar Desh", which translates to "Oh My Beloved Land".

Besides vibrant performances by various artistes, including children attired in traditional costumes, the star attraction proved to be Assamese playback singer Bornali Kalita, who belted out foot-tapping numbers one after the other.

There was a play as well. A resident of Sector 43, Pankaj Arora, who was part of the audience said, “I am a Punjabi, but I really enjoyed attending this event. There was so much to learn and to understand.”

“Bihu is celebrated across communities in Assam, irrespective of caste and religion. We had invited singers and performers all the way from the state, so guests could be transported to their homeland — get a real sense of the festival. Everybody on the team had worked hard to ensure the success of the event,” explained Phanijyoti Sarma, AAG president.

There was authentic Assamese fare to be sampled as well.

AAG has been organising such events since 2007, with the intent of keeping people connected to their roots and passing on the vibrant culture to the younger generation.
