'Happiness index the true parameter of development,' says Haryana's FM

While concluding the two-day programme Spiritual Wisdom For Businessmen & Industrialists in the Changing Times, Haryana Finance Minister Captain Abhimanyu Singh Sindhu on Sunday said that the happiness index of a country was the real parameter of its development.

The programme was organised at the Omshanti Retreat Centre (ORC) of Brahma Kumaris in the village Bhora Kalan, in Gurgaon.

While sharing his views with the participants, Captain Sindhu said that a few years back, the parameters for development were mostly either finance-related or health-related — such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) and Mother Mortality Rate (MMR). "In the past three to four years, these parameters have changed," said Captain Sindhu. "People have started talking about the happiness index as the key parameter to measure a country's development. Now the growth narrative is to put people’s well-being at the centre of the government’s efforts."

He said the key variables used to explain happiness in different countries are per-capita income, healthy life expectation, having someone to count on in times of trouble, generosity, freedom and trust, with the latter measured by the absence of corruption in business and government.

"The leaders in society, such as the business community or the industrialists, can contribute by providing employment to many people, thereby helping make more people happy," he added.

"This will improve the ‘happiness index’ of our country and bring prosperity in everyone's lives," said Captain Sindhu.

At the event, Captain Sindhu was accompanied by additional general secretary of ORC BK Brijmohan; ORC directors Asha Didi, Surender Bhai and Bhim Bhai; HUDA administrator Yashpal Yadav; sub-divisional magistrate Pataudi Ravinder Yadav; joint director of the Excise & Taxation Department Dilbag Singh; DETC Samir Yadav; and other dignitaries.
