Sec 57, Gurgaon: Residents take to the streets against liquor store

Residents of Samaspur village and Freedom Park Life, a society in Sector 57, Gurgaon, took to the streets on Sunday to protest against the frequent brawls at a neighbouring liquor store.

According to residents, drunk men often raised a ruckus by getting into loud altercations and fights outside the store.

At 6.30 pm, about 30 women came out of their houses to protest against the problem. Soon, they were joined by 80 other people of the area. The group then blocked the road that led to the village.

“The liquor shop is too close to the residential area,” said Satprakash Yadav, a resident of the society. “On top of that, there are no restrictions — people freely drink in the open, which causes problems for the people living nearby. The shop was supposed to be shifted to some other location but that didn’t happen. We had filed a complaint with the civic agencies to take some action but nothing has happened so far. We had no other option but to raise our voice against the problem.”

“We have been protesting against the liquor store for quite some time now,” said Bal Krishna, a resident of Samaspur village. “We had met the officials and filed a complaint with the chief minister grievance window as well. Samaspur is a model village, and this type of atmosphere in a residential area will affect our children adversely.”

Earlier this month, Malibu Towne residents had taken to the streets to protest against a bar in the vicinity of the society.
