Khattar launches ‘Haryana Vision Zero’ to curb road accident deaths

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on May 2 launched the “Haryana Vision Zero” campaign, which aims to curb deaths due to road accidents.

The NASSCOM Foundation, NASSCOM and WRI India would partner with the Haryana government for the campaign. An MOU was signed between the state transport department, NASSCOM and WRI India to take the pilot project to 10 districts of the state.

A workshop was also organised by NASSCOM and WRI India to discuss key road safety issues with the state transport department.

The objective of the workshop was to initiate discussion on all aspects of the issue to influence the legislation process and forge a collective path for road safety in the country.

Addressing the workshop, Khattar said, “The state government has a vision to achieve the target of zero deaths in road accidents. Haryana is the first state in India to adopt ‘Vision Zero’ towards traffic deaths, and will hopefully be the first state to bring such deaths to zero.”

He assured that all road safety measures would be implemented in the state. He said that traffic police in Haryana has been asked to organise awareness camps about road safety measures and that driving training schools would be opened in every district of the state. Road safety has also been made part of the curriculum in schools.

Khattar said that six “Automatic Fitness Testing Centers for vehicles,” like the one in Rohtak, would be set up in the state to point out wear and tear in the vehicle. He also said that some system of imposing a fee would be implemented to curb overloading of vehicles and the Motor Vehicle Act would be implemented strictly.

Responding to the issue of no footpath or cycle track along Golf Course Road, the Chief Minister said that the road had 16 lanes and there was enough space to make provision for pedestrians and cyclists. He entrusted Sandeep Khirwar, commissioner of police, to look into the issue.

The workshop focused on policies, best practices and institutional mechanisms for adopting safer road design and engineering for cities.

Milind Soman, brand ambassador of the campaign, model and actor, said, “Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Last time when I was in Gurgaon, I couldn’t run along the Golf Course Road as it was really unsafe. We have to improve such stretches to ensure safer roads.”

Krishan Lal Panwar, transport minister, Rao Narbir Singh, public works department (PWD) minister, SS Dhillon, additional chief secretary, transport, Suprabha Dahiya, transport commissioner, and DGP KK Sandhu were also present at the occasion along with other district officers.
