Residents of several societies on MG Road have joined hands to rid the road of encroachment. A joint team comprising members of RWAs from Heritage City and Essel Tower RWA, christened HERWA, has been formed to work in tandem with district authorities on a host of issues involving MG Road.
Archana Saxena, who is heading the initiative, said, “I always wanted to do something for the society. So why not start with my own people, my neighbourhood? The main objective is to rid MG Road of encroachment and get a permanent solution to traffic snarls on the stretch. We started work in mid-January, and it is going well with the help of the traffic police and Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon [MCG]. They have been actively supporting us in the drive.”
MG Road, one of the most sought-after places in the city, has eight malls and various high-end condominiums, such as Heritage City, Essel Towers and Beverly Park.
Yet, commuters face hell on the stretch.
Deepak Kapoor, RWA president, Beverly Park, said, “This stretch from Iffco Chowk to Sikenderpur Metro station has the potential to become a flagship area for not just Gurgaon, but for the entire NCR. Management of traffic, utilities, services, and unauthorised vending and parking are matters that need monitoring on a regular basis. I am also concerned about the chaos that will emerge as a consequence of remodelling Iffco Chowk.”
People visiting malls park their vehicles haphazardly in the service lanes, which lead to heavy congestion.
There are more than 10,000 residents living in different condominiums on MG Road, and everybody is eager to participate in this initiative.
"Since MG Road has so many malls, it should be a place where people should feel happy coming to. But the scenario is different — people avoid coming here in the peak hours. We want to change that,” said Rajeev Sinha, RWA president of Essel Towers.
At the start of the year, residents managed to get consent for installing bollards on the road outside MGF Metropolitan Mall. Heritage City is also expecting to get an approval for an emergency exit to be used when the service lane is jam-packed.
MCG recently announced that it will revamp the "Mall Mile" and turn it into a "smart road", with no encroachment and no illegal parking.
“We have taken on a zero-tolerance policy for unauthorised parking and encroachment on this stretch, and will not allow any kiosks on the footpaths along the road or near mall entries,” confirmed an MCG official.
