Holi in the air, food raids in Noida intensify

A week ahead of Holi, Food and Civil Supplies Department has launched surprise raids on sweet meat shops, food stores and godowns in Noida to check adulteration. To meet the high demand for the festival of colours, unscrupulous food vendors indulge in adulteration on a large scale.

During the raids, food inspectors have collected samples of various food items from the godowns of restaurants and sent to laboratory for test.

A team consisting of Food Inspectors, Vineet Kumar, Shiv Nath and Ashutosh Kumar carried out a raid on a godown in Sector 88, Noida.

Speaking to City Spidey after the raid, Vineet Kumar said during the festive season, demand for various food products and sweets goes up dramatically. Taking advantage of the situation, businessmen make fast buck at the cost of unassuming customers, through such foul means.

The samples collected include those of khoya, gujiya and ghee. Officials said these will now be tested in the laboratory of the Food and Civil Supplies Department of Uttar Pradesh in Lucknow. If the samples fail the test, the guilty traders will be dealt with stringently as per the law.

Krishan Murari, RWA President of Kendriya Vihar II, Sector 82, said many residents are aware of the fact that shopkeepers routinely sell adulterated khoya and gujiya during Holi. Hence, they avoid buying these products.

Officials of Food and Civil Supplies Department have vowed to intensify raids in the city in the days to come to ensure that businessmen indulging in adulteration are brought to book and the residents enjoy a happy and healthy Holi.
