What’s an 'idiot chowk'? Let Dwarkaites tell you A tree stands in the middle of the road near the roundabout at the Sector 10-11 crossing

What’s an "idiot chowk"? Ask Dwarkaites, in case you want to know.

The answer: The chowk at the crossing of sectors 10 and 11, near the Metro station.

And, why's that? The recently constructed roundabout — meant to ease traffic — has eaten into half of the commuting space, leaving people exasperated!

Hence the unflattering epithet "idiot chowk".

The Delhi Metro pillar stands right in the middle of the road

Residents of the area have been complaining to Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and other concerned agencies to have the construction removed, or rectified.

Sunil Sareen, joint secretary of Dwarka Forum and a resident of Bharat Vandana Apartments of Sector 19, says to City Spidey, “We are calling this chowk the 'idiot chowk'.  It has been constructed so badly that most of the area for commuting has been taken up by the roundabout. The road, which needed to be hurdle-free, now also has a tree and a big iron pillar in the middle! Can you imagine how dangerous the situation is? A collision can happen any time.”

Residents claim the chowk had smoother traffic before the roundabout.

Swati Chawla, a resident of Sector 10, adds, “This roundabout has faulty design. You cannot see all the sides while negotiating it. Also, it is unnecessarily big for a roundabout. It certainly needs to be modified.”

RTI activists from Dwarka, Sanjeev Goel and Shobhit Chauhan, have written on the subject to all the concerned agencies. They said DDA should immediately remove the pillar and the tree in the middle of the road.

Newly appointed chief engineer of DDA, SN Singh, says, “We are aware of the situation and are doing the needful. The tree will be transplanted to another location — we can’t cut it, though. The pillars are by Delhi Metro. But they have no objections if we remove them. So both the hindrances will be cleared soon.”
