If traffic comes to a crawl at peak hours in Ghaziabad, blame it on encroachments, wrong parking and vehicles stopping in the middle of the road.

These were some of the issues identified by residents of Indirapuram high-rises, who participated in a traffic-awareness drive in the presence of SN Singh, the newly appointed SP Traffic of Ghaziabad, on Sunday.

Indirapuram Vikas Manch, a residents’ group that works for social development, took the initiative for the drive. AOA members and residents who participated in the event raised issues such as encroachment, unruly parking and wrong stoppages by vehicles that choked traffic by narrowing the driving area and causing problems to pedestrians as well.

The residents also apprised the traffic chief of the indiscipline of autorickshaw drivers and their haphazard parking. The other issue of serious concern was the steep price of parking in malls located in the colonies. Many visitors to the mall park vehicles outside, so they can escape high parking fees. This also added to traffic congestion.

The residents wanted CCTV surveillance and promised to offer volunteers to help police in maintaining discipline on the roads. They also suggested that police hold traffic awareness camps.

Alok Kumar, patron of FedAOA, who was present at the event, told City Spidey that traffic congestion was a major problem for Indirapuram and that it was mainly caused by vehicles parked wrongly. "We also demanded the SP to provide a tow crane on standby, so the people are scared to park their vehicles in no-parking zones,” he said.

SN Singh, the SP traffic, assured the residents that more traffic police personnel would be assigned to the area to ensure smooth movement of traffic. The SP also instructed local police to take strict measures against owners for wrong parking.
