Gurgaon: Dark lanes worry Sec 57 residents

Residents of Sector 57, Gurgaon, have been refraining from stepping out after sunset. Almost all the streetlights in the area are defunct and the area wears a gloomy look, with scanty lighting due to the traffic.

The maintenance of the affected area is under Ansal Buildwell Limited, a real estate developer. But the upkeep of streetlights is not up to mark and the roads are poorly lit. Half of the lights are defunct whereas the remaining are old and are full of dust and dead insects.

Residents of societies such as Royale Residency Floors, Sushant Floors, IRWO Classic Apartments and The Legend Apartments are worst affected.

They even avoid walking to Boom Plaza, the nearest mall to the aforementioned societies. Ruchika Dayal, a resident of block A, says, “One is dependent on the male members of the family even for the smallest of needs. We can’t go out as it is completely dark outside.”

Meanwhile, lack of proper lighting in these lanes draws anti-social elements in the area. And with a liquor vendor close by, residents feel all the more unsafe.

Residents’ woes do not end here as the presence of a slum near posh societies is another cause for concern. Umesh Kalra, a resident of Rail Vihar, says, “We are afraid of going out as the slum dwellers drink at night and get in to unnecessary brawls. A friend of mine was riding a bike when a drunk person accidently came in front of the bike. It took us more than 15 minutes to settle the dispute that ensued.”

Speaking to City Spidey, Joginder Singh, former RWA president, said, “There is rarely any maintenance work on the lights. However, we have been in constant touch with the builder to fix the lights and hope the area will be illuminated soon."

Ajay Pandita, vice president of Ansal Buildwell Limited, was not available for comment.
