If you want to donate blood to thalassaemia patients, here's where you can head

Gurgaon is witnessing a seven-day blood-donation drive this week. The drive started yesterday, on June 12, with a blood donation camp at Vatika Triangle, Sushant Lok I, and is a joint collaboration between Vatika Enviro, a facility management organisation in Gurgaon, and National Thalassemia Welfare Society.

Yesterday's camp, which was open to everyone meeting *certain medical requirements, saw about 26 units of blood being collected. This collected blood will be used by the thalassaemia society to treat thalassaemia patients.

For those unfamiliar with the disease, thalassaemia is a hereditary blood disorder that renders individuals unable to produce enough haemoglobin, resulting in severe anaemia.

Dr Rahul Bhargava, from Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital in New Delhi, said, "Blood banks almost invariably run out of supply in the peak summers, so we are hoping more donors turn up at the next camps, so this shortage can be tackled. The National Thalassemia Welfare Society needs blood every day, and these donation camps really help. So every blood donor is a life saver."

And indeed, the number of units collected has gone up. Today's camp, held at Vatika City Point, Sector 25, MG Road, saw 200 units of blood being collected.

"It feels good to be able to donate blood,” said Ujwal Sood, a donor. “These camps help sensitise society to this noble cause, and come as beacons of hope to those in need of blood. Every drop counts, and I'm happy to have been able to pitch in."

For those who are interested, here is the schedule for the next blood donation camps, operational from 10 am to 5 pm:
