After inventing a T-shirt that charges mobile phones and a dustbin that sends alerts when full, Pawan Kumar, a B.Tech student from Raj Nagar, Ghaziabad, has now come up with a smart electricity meter to check electricity theft via tampering.

The electricity meter, equipped with infra red and magnetic sensors, rings an alarm in case of tampering and can also send an alert message to the authorities.

For this project, Pawan partnered with Amish Katiyayan, a B.Tech student from IP University who lives in Rohini, Delhi.

However, what’s really interesting is the way the duo thought up the invention. According to Pawan, he and his friend overheard two people talking while travelling in the Metro. They were talking about how they stole electricity by tampering their electricity meters and saved up on electricity bills. They used to run their air conditioners on the tampered meters.

“We later came to know that the government loses several crores of rupees every year due to such people. This led us to inventing the meter. The meter set can be put together at a cost of around one thousand rupees,” Pawan said.

Pawan added that he would approach the electricity department and present it to them. The entire process can be centrally monitored.

The invention was unveiled at a student coaching centre in Raj Nagar and was sponsored by Dinesh Raina, Pawan’s teacher at the coaching centre.
