Residential societies and bungalows along the banks of the irrigation drain in Noida may get respite from the foul smell emanating from the drain as Noida Authority has taken the responsibility of cleaning it now.

Earlier, the onus of cleaning of the drain lied with the irrigation department of Uttar Pradesh government.

The 17-kilometre long drain, which originates from Kondli in Delhi and ends in Yamuna river, passes through many densely populated residential sectors of Noida. The water flowing in the drain is highly contaminated and has been a nuisance for those whose houses are in its close proximity. The UP irrigation department has failed to keep it clean as it is full of non-degradable waste, polythene bags and sludge that chokes the flow of waste water.

Residents had been lodging complaints about this with the Noida Authority but the work was not under the purview of the Authority. But a few months ago, the Authority sought permission for taking over this job from the irrigation department. It has finally been granted permission.

RS Yadav, project engineer, public health, told City Spidey that the process of inviting tender for cleaning of the drain has already been initiated.

At a meeting held in Indira Gandhi Kala Kendra, Sector 6, Pankaj Singh, Noida MLA, said “The Authority had sought No Objection Certificate from the irrigation department and it has been given green signal. This time, I can assure that the drain will be cleaned properly." The MLA was taking stock of the city’s preparedness to tackle flood-like situation during monsoon.
