To improve local traffic management and law-and-order situation in neighbourhoods, the city police has decided to rope in resident volunteers and security guards deployed in residential societies to work alongside police.
With a view to enhance the quality of traffic management and law-and-order situation in Ghaziabad neighbourhoods, the city police has decided to rope in resident volunteers and security guards deployed in residential societies to work in tandem with the local police. They are to be trained by the police, and will manage traffic and keep an eye out for anti-social elements in the vicinity.
The guards will be provided by the AOAs of respective societies, and will work during the peak traffic hours in the vicinity of their respective society.
Speaking to City Spidey, Alok Kumar, patron of Federation of Apartment Owners Associations (FedAOA), said that the initiative was an excellent example of coordination between the police and the AOAs. “Initially, it was planned that AOA members would participate with the residents. But later, we proposed that security guards, who are available round the clock, can be deputed instead. We had started this initiative a few years, back but it failed to come through as the police officials were changed. We completely support the police, and will do our bit to participate in the initiative,” Kumar added.
Residents, too, are appreciative of the police’s efforts to connect with the general public.
Speaking to City Spidey about the police response on WhatsApp groups, Malay Majumdar, general secretary of Gaur Green City, said, “We’ve never had such prompt response from the police before. I received instant response from the police via WhatsApp — that too at 2.45 am at night.”
Mohit Dwivedi, president of Krishna Apra Garden, feels the same. He said a change in the police top brass at the district has definitely had an impact on the petty crimes, which were common in the neighbourhoods until recently. “Crime has definitely come down,” he added.
Speaking to City Spidey, Akash Tomar, SP, Ghaziabad, said that the police is working towards roping in RWAs, NGOs, active residents, civil defense, special police officers and security guards to get them to assist the police in bettering traffic management and the local law-and-order situation. The participants will be trained by the police to manage traffic and handle neighbourhood issues.
“Among the volunteers employed, those who are poor and require financial assistance will be paid. Security guards will be trained properly. In a proposal, we have also asked the Nagar Nigam, Ghaziabad Development Authority and National Highways Authority of India to close over a thousand illegal cuts and repair streetlights all across the city,” Tomar added.
