Overflowing sewer water, unattended garbage, choked drains... yes, we all know why, but are the authorities ever going to wake up?
Come rains, and overflowing sewers become a common sight in Dwarka.
This time, City Spidey takes a look at the markets of sectors 4 and 12.
A social worker and former RWA general secretary of Dwarkadheesh Apartments in Sector 12, Anjana Sinha, complains, “You can see overflowing sewer water in the market adjacent to our society. It’s really filthy — and that’s the sight that greets you at the entrance. Even a couple of days back, the condition was pathetic. Civic bodies should take notice of sanitation situation in the markets.”
The market of Sector 4 is a similar picture.
Mukesh Singh, a shopkeeper, said, “Both the sewer system and garbage management are pathetic in this market. The sewer lines are never cleaned out, and the garbage is never disposed of. Civic agencies should take the situation a bit more seriously, particularly with the rains in.”
Residents blame the eateries and the lackadaisical approach of the civic bodies for the deteriorating situation.
Prabhakar Gautam, RWA member of Sector 12, Pocket 5, Dwarka Kunj Apartments, said, "The sewer pipelines are never cleaned — not once since they were laid out! Also, the population around the markets has increased. And then we have the usual problem of eateries dumping their waste into the sewers. So, a whole lot of factors are responsible for this overflow. And during the rainy season, the problem aggravates.”
On the matter, chief engineer, Delhi Jal Board, RS Negi, said, "I will look into the matter, and initiate steps to rectify the situation.”
