Noida Authority clears area around Mahagun Moderne

Following the mob violence outside Mahagun Moderne, a society in Sector 78, Noida Authority carried out an anti-encroachment drive in the area today. About 60 huts were razed to the ground, leaving several families homeless.

These huts, which were shelters-cum-stalls for vegetables, fruits and tea, were located right opposite the entry gate of Mahagun Moderne, which was attacked by a mob comprising domestic helps and daily-wage labourers on July 12.

After the incident, the administration felt that the proximity of the shacks from the society was a safety and security concern for the residents of the society.

If an official source is to be believed, the anti-encroachment drive was carried out to put an end to the illegal shacks. Although the shacks were frequented by the residents of Mahagun Moderne to procure groceries and services at economical rates, the  officials believe the area is now much safer for them.

The drive, however, has left many homeless and jobless. Many of them said they were not part of the mob that pelted stones at the society.

Surendra Saik, an immigrant from Budaun, UP, said he has been selling potted plants and flowers to residents of the society. He said, “I had a hut made of iron sheets where i lived and stored my plants. But all that is gone now. I am homeless. And my plants are gone too.”

Mohammad Irshad, originally from Bulandshahar, UP, used to take up civil interior works in the societies in the vicinity. When Irshad returned home from work, he was surprised to find his hut demolished. "I did not have any information about the drive otherwise i could have vacated the hut," said Irshad. "I don't know what to do now."

Nikhil Yadav, a local from Sector 115, repairs flat tyres and minor faults. "The officials told us that we should not carry out commercial work even if the land is ours. They said this land was only meant for farming," said Yadav.

A residents of the sector, on the condition of anonymity, said the Authority had razed huts of those who weren’t part of the mob violence. He said they should have vacated the slums, from where people had come to attack the society.
