Despite residents of the society having sought the intervention of MCG on this issue several times, the civic body has not done anything about the problem.
Sanitation levels have come to an appalling low around Vijay Vihar, an upscale society in Sector 30, Gurgaon, owing to piles of garbage being mounted on open plots of land outside it. Residents are particularly vocal about the state of sanitation and hygiene that prevails around their condominium.
They have raised the issue repeatedly with Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG), only to be disappointed. The empty plots of land in front of the housing society have become garbage dumps, and this has caused a perpetual stench.
The monsoons have aggravated the situation. “These garbage dumps will now become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and flies,” says Vineet Singh, a resident. “MCG workers are aware of the garbage dumps but refuse to take any action.”
However, the garbage dumps are not the only source of civic nuisance. A taxi stand located nearby has become both a nuisance and a threat to residents’ safety. The taxi drivers bathe in the open, listen to loud music and pass jeering comments to passers-by.
“We are scared to step out, as sometimes the taxi drivers are seen drinking too. After dark, we prefer to stay within the society premises,” says Rupali Kapoor, another resident, who has been living in the society since 1992.
Sensing that the indifference of MCG will continue, residents have now decided to stage a peaceful protest next week. “If this does not lead MCG to action, we shall stage a dharna,” a resident disclosed.
