Frustrated residents met UPPCL top official to discuss high power rates

Residents of high-rises in sectors 74, 76, 77, 78 and 108, Noida, who were unhappy with the builder for charging them higher electricity tariffs than government-fixed rates met the chief executive engineer of UPPCL, JK Gupta, in his Sector 25 office today.

Residents of these sectors, who said their common area maintenance (CAM) charges were being deducted from their prepaid electricity meters, said they felt cheated and that builders used these meters to make an extra buck.

Dhananjay Kumar, a resident of Grand Ajnara Heritage in Sector 74, told City Spidey that the maximum UPPCL fixed charge per kilo watt metre load was Rs 86.78, but they were paying Rs 91.68 for the past one year. “We have asked the builder to show us original electricity bills but he pays no attention to us. Moreover, if someone has not paid their CAM charges, their electricity is disconnected,” he added.

Surendra Kushwaha, a resident of Divine Meadows in Sector 108, said the builder charged Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000 for a new electricity connection, where the UPPCL rate was as low as Rs 5000 to Rs 7,500.

Rajendra Pal, a resident of Amrapali Silicon in Sector 76, told City Spidey that residents at the meeting demanded that audits of the builders be done.

UPPCL chief executive engineer JK Gupta, on his part, assured residents that he would ask all builders to submit a balance sheet of new connections to reach an informed decision. He added that a notice would be sent to builders asking them to submit their reports in 15 days.
