Yes, some more work before you finally let your hair loose. But you will thank us later!

Don't leave for your vacation without reading this

Tick...tock...tick...tick

This is how my watch sounds today. I can hear it above the usual din in office.

When you want the hours to fly by, it seems the day starts moving extra slow -- seconds lazy to turn into minutes.

With the long weekend set to start, I'm sure most of you can relate to this. Some people I know have even taken today off and left for some faraway hill stations!

And while you might be super stoked to go on that well-deserved, long-pending trip, it's also important to note that most houses are robbed while the occupants are away on vacations.

Now, coming home to a ransacked, robbed house would be a bummer, wouldn't it?

Here are 7 things to keep in mind to keep your house safe while you are away.

1. Inform your neighbours
This is the first thing you should do. Already friends with your neighbour? Great! Now you can leave home in peace. If you trust them enough, you can even leave your keys with them (If there are plants that need watering). Don't forget to return the favour! Invite them over to dinner when you are back or better still, get them a souvenir from where you are headed.

2. Remove the spare key
No, keeping that spare key under that fake rock in the flower pot outside your main door is not a good idea. Give it to a friend if you absolutely have to, or keep it inside.

3. Unplug electronics, small kitchen appliances and turn off gas
Unplug your TV, laptop, coffee maker, and toaster. Turn off the valve on your gas cylinder. It's not only robbers you got to worry about. There are things inside your house that can blow it to bits. Yes, you are in a hurry to leave, but use this article as a checklist and be safer.

4. Use social media wisely
And that means not checking in and out everywhere you are headed and broadcasting your itinerary on social media. I can already hear people groaning. No details about for how long you are gone and when you will be back. Don’t post anything that would entice criminals to pay your home a visit while you’re away. Less 'likes', probably, but much safer.

5. Take valuables out of your vehicle
Those of you leaving your cars home should take out the audio systems and keep it somewhere safe. Important official documents in the boot? Take those out as well.

6. Lock up
Although the most obvious thing on the list, you’d be surprised how many people forget to lock all of their doors and windows when they’re away. One of the most common places that people forget to lock up are the doors that are seldom used: the windows, the back door, the balcony doors and the garage doors.

7. Tidy up
This isn't going to keep the robbers away. This is a bonus tip for you!

You will most likely be exhausted from the trip and would not like anything better than a cosy bed when you return. Put in some effort before leaving for the vacation. You’ll appreciate it when you return.
